A note about reading at home...
How long should my child read every night? We teachers talk about building "reading stamina." Just like you build up to running a marathon, with reading you start slow and add to your minutes as you go. A fifth grader should be able to sit and read for at least 30-45 minutes without interruption. For some this will be easy, for others more of a challenge. My expectation is to see progress and genuine effort. When should my student do his or her reading? Mrs. Winterbottom reads ALL THE TIME. (I know, what a surprise!) She reads a book in the morning while she eats breakfast, and always reads before bed. Making reading part of your child's bedtime routine is a wonderful idea. Some quiet reading (out of a book, not a device) often helps counteract all the screen-time we experience during the day and helps "quiet" our brain for a good night's sleep. |
